How do I choose the right EV charger?

Budget

Most individuals will prioritise their finances. There are a variety of pricing points to fit any budget. Therefore setting a budget is a great start when looking into EV chargers.

Tethered VS Untethered EV Chargers

Tethered EV Chargers

The charging wire is permanently linked to the unit in a tethered EV charger. Many people prefer this option since the wire is always available and they would only need to uncoil it and connect it to their car, similar to a pump at the petrol station.

The only disadvantage with a tethered charger is that you are restricted to the wire lengths provided by the manufacturer. The normal length is generally five metres. However, you may need to upgrade to a longer cable for an additional fee.

Untethered EV Chargers

This EV charger type is simply a socket with no cable connected to the device. This is why they are often referred to as "socket-only" EV chargers.  Because of this, you will need your charging cable and connect it to the unit and the car when you want to charge your vehicle. Our electricians also recommend having a set place to store the cable, which can be in your car, garage or home.

An untethered charging point provides more versatility. Because the socket is global, it can charge any electric car. This is a great advantage because you are not limited by the charger manufacturer in terms of cable length because you can just purchase your own.

Features

Are there any additional feature you would like the EV charger to come along with?  This could be anything from being able to accessing it at from an app on your phone to being weatherproof.
